Questions

Everything you need to know about working with Bombay Design Lab - from commissioning your first piece to caring for it for years to come.

Process & Commissioning

Every project begins with a conversation. You can reach out via WhatsApp, email, or the contact form on our site. We will discuss your space, your vision, and the kind of piece you are looking for - whether it is something from our existing collections or an entirely new commission.

From there, we share initial concepts, material options, and a detailed quote. Once approved, the piece moves into production at our Mumbai workshop.

Absolutely. Most pieces in our collections can be adapted - dimensions, finishes, materials, and upholstery are all open to discussion. Our collections serve as a starting point; the final piece is shaped around your space and preferences.

While our core focus is bespoke furniture, we are open to taking on broader interior work where it makes sense - particularly when the furniture and the space need to be thought of together. This could involve material consultation, spatial planning, or coordinating with your architect or designer. We also offer focused design consultations for those who want a fresh perspective on a space in progress.

There is no formal minimum order. We would be delighted to create anything from a single side table to an entire home collection.

Each piece is crafted with thoughtful design and detail, and our pricing reflects the time and expertise involved.

Materials & Finishes

We work across a diverse palette of materials - from solid hardwoods and veneers to natural stones and metals to fine upholstery. Our selection spans everything from rich timbers and dramatic stone surfaces to hand-cast metals and a wide array of premium fabrics, including natural and performance blends.

Each material is chosen for its distinctive character, durability, and harmony with the design. We can also accommodate bespoke sourcing requests to suit specific project needs.

Each collection features its own curated palette of finishes. Our offerings include a range of wood tones, metal treatments, and coloured lacquers in both matte and high-gloss options. We also craft custom liquid metal and textured surfaces for a truly distinctive finish.

Finish swatches are displayed on each product page for visual reference only. Please note, as with all natural and handcrafted materials, slight variations in tone, grain, and texture may occur.

Physical samples are available on request and are always recommended before finalising your selection.

Yes. Our standard finish palettes represent what we have refined and tested, but we regularly develop custom finishes for specific projects. If you have a particular colour, texture, or material in mind, let us know and we will explore what is possible.

Pricing & Payment

Pricing depends on the design, dimensions, materials, and finish selected. Since every piece is made to order, we provide a detailed quote after our initial design discussion. This ensures transparency - you know exactly what you are paying for before production begins.

We typically work with a straightforward two-stage structure - an advance to begin production, and the balance on completion before delivery. Exact terms are discussed and agreed upon before we begin.

Lead Times & Delivery

Lead times vary depending on the complexity of the piece and the materials involved. As a general guide, most furniture pieces take 8-12 weeks from approval of the design and materials to completion. Pieces involving specialised processes like cast metal or stone inlay may take longer.

We will always give you a realistic timeline upfront.

Yes. While our workshop is based in Mumbai, we deliver across India and internationally. For domestic deliveries, we coordinate with trusted logistics partners who specialise in handling high-value furniture. International shipments are managed on a case-by-case basis - we will advise on the best approach depending on the destination and the piece.

For Mumbai and surrounding areas, we offer white-glove delivery and installation - our team places each piece exactly where it belongs and ensures every detail is perfect.

For outstation deliveries, we provide comprehensive installation guidance to make the setup process seamless.

Care & Maintenance

Caring for your BDL furniture helps it look beautiful for years to come.

As a general guide, dust wood surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or moisture. For stone, use coasters and wipe spills promptly to minimise the risk of staining.

Upholstered pieces benefit from occasional vacuuming and gentle spot cleaning with a damp cloth and mild detergent. For matte and high-gloss PU surfaces, dust with a soft, dry cloth and, when needed, wipe with a lightly damp, non-abrasive cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that may damage the finish.

Our team is always happy to advise on care methods best suited to your specific materials and finishes.

Yes, and that is part of the beauty. Solid wood develops a richer patina with age. Brass and copper will naturally oxidise, developing character. Leather softens and becomes more supple. These changes are a feature, not a flaw - they make your piece more yours over time. If you prefer a consistent appearance, we can recommend finishes and care routines that slow this process.

We stand behind our work. If your piece needs attention - whether from wear, an accident, or simply a desire to refresh its look - reach out and we will discuss the best course of action. For pieces in Mumbai, we can often handle repairs on-site. For others, we will guide you through the process.
